Green Initative at the Lyndhurst Community Presbyterian!
Help us with Spring Clean Up April 14th 2012 -- 12 Noon -- check in with John McCumber!
Look for a special film night Friday April 27th and the Festival of the Earth on April 22nd! Please save those dates!
All of us at LCPC recognize the importance of sustaining God's great gift to us, our earthly home! We have an active "green team" with 8+ people working on our recent project: Miracle Sunday (May 15th, 2011). This ambitious program calls us to raise significant funds to greatly improve the energy efficiency of our buildings and help inner-city partner North Church move to a much more energy savings home. We see this as key in "acting local / thinking global"!
Please get in touch with Emily Becker or John McCumber to find out more.
It didn't just start, as in the past we have hosted a "Green Fair", replaced inefficient appliances with EnergyStar rated ones, performed Energy Audits, replaced incadescent lighting with CFL's & LEDs, screened films, held 10 week adult classes, and eliminated styrofoam (and of course, implemented recycling). Special worship & music focus has also been a part of it.
We take planet protection seriously for those less fortunate and all future generations.
Please read our Miracle Sunday Letters: $45,000+ has been rasied!!!
Dear Members and Friends of LCPC, Letter #1 March 4, 2011
Care for God’s creation has always been a part of the Christian message and mission. God has provided great abundance for us and we are obligated to be stewards of this abundance. The world’s focus on care for the environment, climate change and use of resources is part of everyone’s thinking and concern. Blessings provided to us make it possible for us to be generous in helping meet the needs of others and of this church.
The Green Team at LCPC has chosen to focus on the conservation needs of our building as a place to first act and in that make a difference to our immediate world
This letter announces an event named “Miracle Sunday - Building a Green Future for LCPC.” It is a 12 week process in which the Green Team will acquaint you with the purposes of this Sunday and the details of how the process works. We will be sending several letters, hosting meetings for the congregation and providing announcements for our Sunday worship, newsletters and worship folders.
The goal of this campaign is to provide, through gifts, $100,000 to LCPC to address 5 areas of our church building and properties. These gifts are presented to the church on Sunday May 15, 2011. The project areas are:
The first area needing immediate attention is to rework some of the boiler function of the boiler in the main building.
Second is improving insulation in the ceiling of the CEC. Right now the level in the CEC is R2.
Third, there are 40 windows in Bloomfield Hall and 1 in the main building as well as 7 doors in the main building that need replacing. The present ones are originals.
Fourth, we would like to provide a gift to North Church for their ongoing ministry.
Fifth we want to provide a fund for ongoing building and grounds improvements.
See the back of this letter for numbers and more detailed description of each item.
The funds for these projects are secured by gifts, not pledges. The second letter and the meetings scheduled for the congregation throughout the next 12 weeks will describe HOW this process works.
The Building a Green Future team members are: Carl and Ann Ebner, Steve Pinti, Jeff Herberth, Harry Eberts, Louise Grob and Emily Becker. We look forward to sharing with you this unique opportunity for practicing in a very local way, our concern for the environment and conservation of ours and God’s resources by Building a Green Future for LCPC.
Sincerely, Ann Ebner and Steve Pinti, for the Session of LCPC
The Building a Green Future at LCPC planning team will host a QUESTION AND ANSWER session on Sunday, March 13 after both services – 9:50 a.m. and 12:00. The areas of the church building needing attention will be highlighted and Steve Pinti will answer questions. Meet at the front of the sanctuary. We encourage you to stay and see for yourself.

Building a Green Future Miracle Sunday for May 15, 2011
Dear Members and Friends of LCPC:
Thank you for the attention you have given to the worship service announcements and the letter of 2 weeks ago regarding our campaign for Building a Green Future for LCPC.
To recap - Building a Green Future: Miracle Sunday is an opportunity to support several areas of our church building needing attention. These areas include one of the boilers in the main building, ceiling insulation at the CEC, doors and windows for both the main building and Bloomfield Hall, our support for North Church, and an ongoing fund for reoccurring maintenance needs. Sustainability is important for our future. You were all invited to see the areas of concern and ask questions at a meeting on Sunday, March 13.
Now it’s time to describe HOW the process of supplying funds for these needs works. First of all Miracle Sunday: Building a Green Future is not a pledge of future income. It is a gift made to the church from current assets specifically to improve the energy use of our buildings. We’ll describe several scenes using fictitious names and situations.
Situation 1 – Fred and Ethyl Mertz had some jewelry they no longer wanted or needed so they sold the gold and precious gems to a jeweler. The money resulting from this sale was given to the church during the dedication Sunday for Miracle Sunday.
Situation 2 – Danny and Delilah decided that they could sell some bonds that they’ve had for a long time and provide the proceeds to the church for the same event. They arranged for the sale, sold them and wrote a check for Miracle Sunday. One of the bonuses of their sale was that they had some tax benefits per discussion with their tax advisor.
Situation 3 – The Young family decided to run a neighborhood rummage sale and donate all the proceeds to Miracle Sunday. They conducted the sale 3 weeks before the Miracle Sunday so they were able to present a check to the church on Miracle Sunday.
Situation 4 – Hot rod Hank decided to sell one of his cars and donate the proceeds to Miracle Sunday. He listed the auto on local web sites, and sold the car quickly! He presented a check to the church on Miracle Sunday.
Situation 5 – Alice received a generous tax refund this year so she decided to provide the money to the Miracle Sunday Campaign.
You get the idea – the Green Team at LCPC does NOT want to become a sales agent for peoples’ goods as there isn’t enough time or energy to do that. However, everyone can do their part prior to the celebration (for us on May 15, 2011) and be thankful for our blessings.
This campaign needs to be conducted and concluded in a timely manner because the boiler repair has to be done in the off season for heating. We want to benefit from the increased insulation in the CEC and window/door replacement before the next cooling & heating seasons, too. You can see the need to have the funds in hand yet this spring.
You may have questions yet about this process. Session members Ann Ebner and Steve Pinti, Pastor Harry Eberts, and other team members Jeff Herberth, Louise Grob, and Emily Becker are available to answer questions. We will conduct another after church Q & A on April 10 at 9:50 and 12:00 just like we did in March.
Thank you for your interest and your support. As we have been blessed, so can we share our blessings.
Sincerely,
The Green Team – John McCumber, Steve Pinti, Jeff Herberth, Ann Ebner, Louise Grob, Harry Eberts, Steve Ritchey and Carlynn Canny and Emily Becker
